Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze the position and functions of metapragmatics in the development of pragmatic theories. Firstly, the paper analyzes the purpose, object, characteristics, significance and functions of metapragmatics; then, it makes a further research on some important pragmatic principles and maxims such as Politeness Principle, Principle of Economy and the metalanguages describing pragmatic forces etc in view of metapragmatics. Lastly, it draws the conclusion that metapragmatics is the motive power of the development of pragmatics.
