Abstract: Michael Connelly researches teacher education from the perspective of narrative inquiry. He distinguishes “teacher knowledge” and “knowledge for teachers”. He positions teacher education in the context and intersection of globalization and local educational and cultural traditions. By reviewing the history of teacher education reforms in North America, he emphasizes the centrality of teachers in education reform. He explicates teacher education as a lifelong career and learning in a narrative perspective. He argues that the teacher educators need to change the discourse from directly ‘bring in’ to Shijing Xus ‘reciprocal learning’ on the basis of fully understanding the different settings. He proposes a holistic view of the educational ecosystem and delineates how to develop teacher education through a narrative perspective with the metaphor of the educational ecosystem. By considering teacher education in the landscape of this educational ecosystem and narrative perspective, he gives some suggestions regarding teacher education and development.
